What’s so special about Solid Surface?
8th June 2018
We, at BSF Solid Surfaces are biased, as we believe the products we offer are, quite simply,
the best in the market place, but the question is why do we feel so passionately about fabricating from Solid Surface material?
Solid Surface material has been around for quite some time and has proven to be amongst the most diverse and versatile of materials. It can be used for a multitude of applications, in a wide variety of places.
We, here at BSF Solid Surfaces Ltd, have seen Solid Surface used for what you might expect, reception desks, kitchen counter tops, vanity units, tea points, but we have also been involved with projects that have included dance floors in nightclubs and bars, the Propeller Walling Feature at Forbury Place, as well as for DJ booths, table tops and the huge great sign next to the M4.
We love Solid Surface for its durability. It has the ability to be thermoformed into amazing shapes, cleaned so that the stains are eradicated and includes a wide range of colours, with enough choice to satisfy most designs.
The material is clever and elegant, because it is equipped with so many advantages, which is why we enjoy working with Corian, Hi Macs, Staron,Hanex, Durat and the other major brands of Solid Surface.
Take a look at our website, www.bsfsolidsurfaces.com where you can see more examples of why Solid Surface is a fantastic product and why you should give it a second glance.

Why and how do we template?
Templating is required to ensure that fabricated items will accurately fit into the area allocated for them. At this stage we have the opportunity to discuss and offer advice to our customers. Templating an item before fabrication will ensure that errors are captured before build and minimise the work required at installation,
in turn reducing the inconvenience to the customer.
Whichever solid surface material you choose, Corian, Hi Macs, Staron, Hanex, Durat etc BSF ‘s templating procedure will remain the same, utilising the best equipment for the job. We use a Prodim to digitally template as well as laser templating, or using hardboard and a tape measure.
Once we have surveyed a job, we will transfer the information collated and produce a drawing, which the client then reviews and either makes changes, or signs to indicate their acceptance that our interpretation of their requirements is correct.
This is then issued to our Works Manager for production.
This means that our workmanship, tools, quality and fabrication techniques have been independently evaluated by our suppliers, and consequently, BSF Solid Surfaces Ltd have been recognised for our dedication to providing the best quality fabrication. This in turn guarantees our fabrication is of the highest standard of quality, and enables us to offer at least a ten year warranty on the many materials and types of fabrication we offer.
Why should you choose Solid Surface over other surface options for your interiors?
26th April 2018
Solid Surfaces such as Corian, LG Hi Macs, Staron, Hanex and Duratare not new products to the market place, however, sometimes the extent of their potential as a material to choose is not recognised. So why opt for a Solid Surface over other hard surface choices such as marble, granite, engineered stone, stone and wood?

How Hygienic Is Solid Surface? 24th April 2018
As a non –porous material, Solid Surface is the ideal surface choice for areas where hygiene is of paramount importance eg hospitals, clean rooms and laboratories.
Being non-porous, it is also germ repellent, stain resistant and impervious to fluids, this makes it easy to keep clean and perfect for maintaining a sanitary environment. Bacteria, mould and mildew cannot grow on it, therefore, preventing the spread o infection. In addition, as it can be seamlessly jointed, there is much less likelihood of water ingress and other fluids or foodstuffs contaminating the area.
We have been incredibly fortunate to have been involved with some prestigious, exciting and interesting projects, including the Chicago Rock Cafe Rollout, The Museum of the King of Bahrain, The Francis Crick Institute, NAPP Pharmaceuticals and McAfee.
We still get inspired and excited by projects 20 years on and would welcome your enquiries and designs to get involved with.
This statement includes Solid Surfaces such as Corian, H Macs, Staron, Hanex….as well as wood, granite, marble, stainless steel, laminate, quartz, engineered stone......no surface is indestructible!
When choosing your work surface don’t be fooled into believing that Solid Surface is much softer than granite and therefore scratches more readily. Yes it is true that granite is a harder product, however, the real beauty here is if you scratch granite that really is it. If you scratch Solid Surface as it’s a repairable material, it can be fixed, within reason, to look as good as new.
It is important to understand and listen to advice when choosing a colour. Although each Solid Surface manufacturers utilise their own production processes, each colour they produce will come through the same manufacturing process – some colours are more suitable for high traffic areas as they are more forgiving than others – the darker colours just show up the marks more easily than other, lighter colours, or those with a lot of particulates, they are not softer than the others. There are care and maintenance guidelines provided by all the leading manufacturers - please click on the links to see the advice offered : CD UK - Corian Care and Maintenance and LG Hi Macs Care and Maintenance.
My kitchen counters are black with a lot of particulates, if you look very closely you may see “skate marks”, not unlike those seen on a dark car. I say if you look very closely because if you just look normally, you would never notice them.
In fact, Solid Surface is like a fine wine, getting better with age if cared for correctly, unlike other surface choices.
We talk a lot about bespoke fabrication of the products we offer, this is because everything we manufacture is handcrafted to specific sizes and shapes, even items produced for rollouts are treated as if they are one of a kind and manufactured by hand.
We are proud to fabricate from Solid Surface material due to the flexibility and freedom to produce anything, within reason, that a customer desires
As a Quality Network Industrial Partner of Corian, a Quality Club Member of LG Hi Macs and an Approved Fabricator of Staron and Hanexwe can offer a wide range of decors, which can then be made into anything that the customer wants,
We offer a HUGE choice of decors for any project!
We offer a HUGE choice of decors for any project!
A challenge for any project is to decide on the right décor for the design, especially for counter surfaces, reception desks, troughs and vanities, as these areas are often prominent and used frequently.
Because we work with a variety of materials, including Corian, Hi Macs, Staron, Hanex,Durat etc we are confident that there will be something that is appropriate for you. There are colours which have been produced to offer an alternative to concrete which seems to be the current in-vogue material. There are also finishes with veined and marble effects, which have been produced to resemble marble and granite.
If you would like to receive any samples of colours you are interested in, please feel free to get in touch by sending an email to email@example.com, or phone us on 01277 263603, and we can organise these for you. You will then be able to see for yourself how perfect they might be for your project, which coupled with the benefits of using Solid Surfaces, make them the perfect surface solution. How Do I Clean Solid Surface?
So, did you know that Solid Surface is relatively low maintenance, compared to other hard surfaces? This is true of all the Solid Surfaces we supply (Corian, Hi Macs, Staron, Hanex etc).
Because it is non porous, stains are surface stains only and can be cleaned using most household cleaners. In our experience using any household cleaners with or without bleach, will remove stains quite easily, that’s not to say you don’t need elbow grease, but with the use of a kitchen sponge or brush, stains should easily be removed. This includes red wine, turmeric and beetroot, stains that normally instil fear in even the hardiest of us. For more stubborn stains, you can use a product called Bar Keepers Friend (or similar ) , which is a light powder cleaner, containing bleach, which can be rubbed over the surface and if necessary, left to soak. We do not recommend the more abrasive powder cleaners, as these could, potentially, dull down the finish of the top, which can be revived, but causes unnecessary extra work and adds cost.
This ability to bring the surface back to its original appearance, after usage, is another advantage to be considered when making surface choices.
Wow! The sheet material itself is sent into us in large sheets, which we then cut, shape, thermoform and seam using the specialist techniques and tooling of our trade. We manipulate into your bespoke, handcrafted designs, making it suitable for just about any application you might desire.
Did you know that Solid Surface is non porous, meaning that stains and germs cannot penetrate its’ surface. This is true of all the Solid Surfaces we supply (Corian, Hi Macs,Staron, Hanex etc).
If cared for and cleaned properly, the growth of mould, mildew, bacteria and other nasty things can be avoided, unlike other surface choices. Counter tops can be made as one seamless piece, with a choice of integrated sinks and coved backsplashes, therefore, there are no dirt traps and they are easier to keep clean and are perfect for areas where hygiene and cleanliness are of importance. Crucially, this makes them low maintenance, and very easy to keep clean.
Following all the questions we regularly receive regarding Solid Surface, we have decided we are going to produce regular “Snippets” of information answering these questions, starting with the most obvious.
What Is Solid Surface?
Ok, I’m not going to bore you with a load of technical information about what Solid Surface is.
Quite simply, it is an advanced, composite blend of natural minerals and acrylic and/or polyester polymer dependent on the brand you select. This creates a man made, stone-hard surface, that can be manufactured into counter tops, reception desks, vanity tops and many, many, many other applications, the list of potential uses for Solid Surface is limited only by the imagination.
We at BSF Solid Surfaces Ltd would like to welcome you to 2018 and wish you a prosperous and healthy year ahead.
